Apple iPad 2 Fail

Just been given a nice shiny new, well second hand, iPad 2. Awesome!

So, getting up to speed and putting a few apps on there. But, the only thing I will really make use of on it, mail, is not quite going to work properly. Why ? ? ? Because Apple don’t allow you to sync Gmail contacts. Exchange, YES, the Others, YES, but Gmail …. NO!

Apple … Why the hell NOT? I would love to know your answer!

(But not quite this iPad…yet!)

WordPress has BROKEN all my Permalinks :(

WordPress Logo - Wikipedia
I recently upgraded my system, and shortly afterwards it appears that all my permalinks have broken.

I now get 404 permalinks errors for all pages outside of the front page! Not cool! 🙁

I tried changing the permalinks structure to a custom one and away from the index.php/%date%/%postname% I kept gettting, to just a /%date%/%postname%/ link structure, but then I discovered it was broken.

This is a bug in the latest version of WordPress, and appears it is quite wide spread. Just do a search for “wordpress permalinks error 404 index.php” and you’ll see. I have come across a bug trac for it: Error 404 with /index.php/%postname%/ permalink strucutre, but appears there is no official fix for it yet. There appears to be a few ad-hoc fixes, but nothing substantial. Hopefully they’ll have it fixed soon though.

I have reset my structure to default, so =?p…. So, if you have pages linked, please bear with me in the meantime!

Most frustrating!

After deleting the database and restoring it TWICE, along with removing the WordPress directory and re-installing it again and then having to recreate everything again, it has been an experience, and I have learnt loads more about Ubuntu and WordPress. Nice one.

Anyway, currently back in Cape Town, and it is pretty nippy compared to Luanda! Here till Sunday!

Just applied a new patch, which made it worse as in it didn’t display anything. Bummed. 🙁

The Interview!!

01h20 interview!! Well, luckily I spent 2 days solid getting back up to speed on the things I needed to know for the interview, as it was pretty intense!

They asked loads of questions about loads of different things. From BGP, to DSL, to OSPF, to VPNs, to LANs and IP Addressing, to IPSec, to VOIP, to SDH and speeds.

Man, what a blinder. But it was good, and I think I managed it pretty well. I answered about 85% of the questions and hopefully that might stand me in some stead. I just guess I’ll have to see what happens. They did say they would let me know sometime next week, so we’ll see where it goes.

Studying to Get that Job!!

Well, I am going to be rather scarce for the next 2 days, as I have a Skype interview, of all things, lined up for Thursday with a great company, Interoute, in London, and I would really like to get it as it’ll be an awesome position with great benefits!

But, I have loads of technology work to catch-up on and it’ll definitely be a catch up game as I haven’t done much work in that pre-sales arena for ages I must admit!! I am pretty much gonna have to learn the entire Internetworking Technology Handbook from Cisco in like 2 days, and then some. My BGP/OSPF/MPLS/VPN/SONET/SDH/ATM/Web Hosting skills all need to be really sharp as there are gonna be alot of questions regarding that I can tell you.

Well, off to study, and I have Aikido this evening, which I am actually NOT looking forward to as I have grading week, and I am really unfit and my neck is still in pain from the practice Last Thursday and elbow from Saturday morning. Plus my knee is still raw from last week Thursday, with a massive carpet burn scar on it too!! So, my Aikido is NOT going great, and that is purely my fault and lack of training and experience too. Sometimes I think I should I should just realise that I am not really that good at sport and should just relegate myself to the sideline to watch and photograph it as opposed to doing it! 🙂

Anyway, I’ll let you know how the Skype Interview goes!!

A bit more done, but a True Techie’s job never is!

So, I have now spent most of the day completing the various options that need to be done, well, that I deemed necessary. So, let’s see,

1) Apache is now set-up, pretty much completely I must say. Only the default option is still set, but that I can change at any time. Just wondering what to do with it right now actually.

2) Webalizer is configured and working, I hope. Well, it works for the root path.

3) I have changed my style to Kubrick, now just need to figure out the Google AdSense bit to start syndication of the blog, and hopefully earn a bit of moola! 🙂

4) Google Analytics is enabled on the site, and I’ll have to check back tomorrow to make sure it is working okay.

5) Mail is still not yet done. 🙁 Haven’t had the time. Plus been mucking with Klippe Rivier’s site again, trying to get that sorted out. Well, it is sorted, though it would be nice to have a decent site. Have to chat to people about that.

6) SEO stuff for still needs to be done.

7) Windows Live Writer installed and working on my office PC (blog now being done from it directly) which is just great as I can now compose offline and publish later! 🙂

Well, we’ll see what tomorrow brings us.
