The Wild Wild WILD WEST! aka Cape Town!!

Well, after last years’ Armed Robbery at our office, in which I had a gun pointed at me and heard the guy say shoot him, and thought my chips were up (I will recount that experience at a later stage), I definitely realised that we living in the Wild West. But after this evenings happenings (as I am writing this at 01h09 Friday Morning from Mom’s house) I now KNOW we live in the Wild Wild WILD WEST. Why ? ? ? Continue reading

The Interview!!

01h20 interview!! Well, luckily I spent 2 days solid getting back up to speed on the things I needed to know for the interview, as it was pretty intense!

They asked loads of questions about loads of different things. From BGP, to DSL, to OSPF, to VPNs, to LANs and IP Addressing, to IPSec, to VOIP, to SDH and speeds.

Man, what a blinder. But it was good, and I think I managed it pretty well. I answered about 85% of the questions and hopefully that might stand me in some stead. I just guess I’ll have to see what happens. They did say they would let me know sometime next week, so we’ll see where it goes.

R 3 516.09 worth of Shocks!!!

Well, I just got my car back, and man, at R 3 516.09 worth of shock repairs, it was quite a shock!! Whoa, talk about steep. But having just driven it back from the repair shop, I must say that it is riding a lot better now! Man it’s is sweet. It was making a “pooof”, or actually more a “whoosh” sound everytime I went over a bump. It was bouncing like crazy in the front, even after old Hedley told me that it was soft, but it was okay for a while still. Yeah, well Hedley was probably trying to save me money, but literally scraping on every bump, well, that is a different story.

Public Transport: WineBeg – Mowbray – Kep Teown

Well, ek is sonder motor vandag, as my car se voor linker wiel is mos heel stukkend. Dit maak a nie so good nie “klunk” elke keer as ek ‘n 3-punt-draai maak. En elke keer as ek oor ‘n gat in die pad of ‘n “speedbump” klap, dan “klunk” dit ook. Die ouen het gese ek moet my groot calculator uithaal!! Oi!!

So, there I was, no vehicle, and having to public it this morning from Wynberg. Well, like a right toss I let a Golden Arrow Bus, heading to Cape Town go past me, thinking . . .

UNISA: Programme in Business “Damagement”

UNISA, hmmm, I was trying to think of a funny acronym for it, something along the lines of “u know you should have studied harder”, but it doesn’t quite work out that way, not in Afrikaans either, although I am sure there might be a way to get somehting out if in one of the other official 9 languages, English and Afrikaans aside ofcourse. Probably something along the lines of “U Neva Included Studying Afterhours!!!” Hey actually that works pretty well for English too!!! 🙂 And that actually pretty much sums up what UNISA is all about!! Well, in my case, “U Neva Included Studying All night”

Well, onto my marks . . . Continue reading

Studying to Get that Job!!

Well, I am going to be rather scarce for the next 2 days, as I have a Skype interview, of all things, lined up for Thursday with a great company, Interoute, in London, and I would really like to get it as it’ll be an awesome position with great benefits!

But, I have loads of technology work to catch-up on and it’ll definitely be a catch up game as I haven’t done much work in that pre-sales arena for ages I must admit!! I am pretty much gonna have to learn the entire Internetworking Technology Handbook from Cisco in like 2 days, and then some. My BGP/OSPF/MPLS/VPN/SONET/SDH/ATM/Web Hosting skills all need to be really sharp as there are gonna be alot of questions regarding that I can tell you.

Well, off to study, and I have Aikido this evening, which I am actually NOT looking forward to as I have grading week, and I am really unfit and my neck is still in pain from the practice Last Thursday and elbow from Saturday morning. Plus my knee is still raw from last week Thursday, with a massive carpet burn scar on it too!! So, my Aikido is NOT going great, and that is purely my fault and lack of training and experience too. Sometimes I think I should I should just realise that I am not really that good at sport and should just relegate myself to the sideline to watch and photograph it as opposed to doing it! 🙂

Anyway, I’ll let you know how the Skype Interview goes!!

A bit more done, but a True Techie’s job never is!

So, I have now spent most of the day completing the various options that need to be done, well, that I deemed necessary. So, let’s see,

1) Apache is now set-up, pretty much completely I must say. Only the default option is still set, but that I can change at any time. Just wondering what to do with it right now actually.

2) Webalizer is configured and working, I hope. Well, it works for the root path.

3) I have changed my style to Kubrick, now just need to figure out the Google AdSense bit to start syndication of the blog, and hopefully earn a bit of moola! 🙂

4) Google Analytics is enabled on the site, and I’ll have to check back tomorrow to make sure it is working okay.

5) Mail is still not yet done. 🙁 Haven’t had the time. Plus been mucking with Klippe Rivier’s site again, trying to get that sorted out. Well, it is sorted, though it would be nice to have a decent site. Have to chat to people about that.

6) SEO stuff for still needs to be done.

7) Windows Live Writer installed and working on my office PC (blog now being done from it directly) which is just great as I can now compose offline and publish later! 🙂

Well, we’ll see what tomorrow brings us.

Finally, Finally, FINALLY!!! UP AND RUNNING! :)

Yay, I finally got my site up and running on my own machine in our office. Running off an Ubuntu 7.10 Server, with the default LAMP install. I am pretty chuffed that this is now working I can tell you. Man, it took a while, and it was soooo much easier in XAMPP on Windows, but I required a challenge and wanted to learn something from scratch so that I could get this running and then understand how to admin it, and wanted it to use minimal resources too. Had to get my mate to help too thought as WordPress sure does some weird things to the database on install. Well the info it writes in there that is. Like IP Address and full directory paths, etc. That took a while to solve, and finally got to bed at like 01h00 last night. But Woo Hoo, it’s finally running so there! 🙂

Well, this is now my first post, and I have a few planned still:

1) Get mail working – properly

2) Change the WordPress theme, and begin customising it.

3) Get analytics up and running

4) Think about mucking about with the Server build, as it is currently running off drive 2 of a 2 drive system. Drive 1 was for a Windows build that I was fiddling with.

5) Get Gallery2 running for picture serving and photo storage and I could really use the extra drive there then as that will take a lot I fear.

6) Get Dad’s site, up and running, so he can start blogging and put the info on his business cards. Don’t tell mom! 🙂

Anyway, back to do some work and more research
